Most visits to your optometrist should be regularly scheduled. But if an emergency develops and you feel unusual symptoms, we’re here to serve our community however much we can.

Emergency Eye Care Visits

An eye emergency is a situation where you need a medical professional’s help ahead of your regularly scheduled visits.

You may need emergency eye care if you experience unusual eye pain, physical trauma, or a sudden change in your vision.

At Trailside Eye Care, we make special accommodations for those needing emergency eye care. Contact us immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Sudden loss of vision or disruptions like blurry vision or flashes and floaters
  • Pain or extreme discomfort in your eyes
  • Headaches or bouts of dizziness

Injuries and acute eye diseases can both constitute an eye emergency. Call us or the nearest hospital in the following cases:

Emergency & Regularly Scheduled Eye Care Visits

If you’re unsure of whether to delay a visit, there’s good advice on when you might need an optometrist to take a look. You might struggle with the decision to report any eye health symptoms you’re experiencing as an emergency, and that’s understandable.

But as a general rule, quickly developing symptoms mean you should seek help. If you feel no symptoms, please follow the recommended schedule. Let us know if you have questions!

Regularly Scheduled Eye Care Visits

According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), eye health needs to be monitored at different frequencies depending on your age. To maximize your chances of maintaining life-long ocular health, you’ll need regular, comprehensive eye exams.

Children need regular pediatric eye exams to monitor their growth and development. These exams should take place once between the ages of 6 and 9 months, once again between the ages of 2 and 5 years, and then every year from ages 6 to 18 years.

Adults aged 19 to 39 require comprehensive eye exams at least every 2 or 3 years. Adults over 40 need an eye exam once every 2 years, and those over 65 need annual eye exams.

These are the minimum requirements for adults with no signs or symptoms of eye disease. If you’re diagnosed with an eye disease or a condition, we might recommend more frequent eye exams. It really depends on your unique situation.
