If you have dry eyes, chances are you’ve tried to treat that burning, dry sensation in the past. Maybe you’ve used eye drops or made lifestyle changes, but you’re looking for something more.

Trailside Eye Care is proud to offer intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments to help alleviate your dry eye symptoms. This state-of-the-art technology provides a longer-term solution to help increase the quality of tears your eyes produce.

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment involves the use of a flashlamp that emits intense wavelengths of light, which is applied to the outer region of the eyes, targeting the oil glands beneath the skin’s surface.

This controlled light helps to liquify and break down oils that may be blocking your meibomian glands, allowing them to flow more freely into your eye and prevent tear evaporation—a common cause of dry eyes.

Our Process

Recommended dry eye treatments are different for every individual. If you have been interested in IPL, or you want to get started with this treatment, learn more about our process.

Dry Eye Assessment

Your optometrist will need to assess the health of your eyes and your tears to determine which type of dry eye treatment is recommended for your symptoms. If your optometrist recommends IPL to treat your dry eyes, we will help you understand the entire process, how it works, and answer any of your questions.

Prior to your IPL treatment, your optometrist may recommend that you avoid certain medications and/or stay out of the sun to ensure your skin isn’t overly sensitive for the treatment.

When you arrive at our office, you will be greeted by our friendly team. We may get some more information from you before bringing you into our IPL treatment room. Once you’re seated in the chair, we will apply a gel to your face to protect your skin, and give you shields to protect your eyes.

The IPL treatment itself is very quick. Your optometrist will apply the flashlamp to your face, near your eyes and begin the IPL treatment. You may feel a slight sensation as the light does its work.

Following the treatment process, your optometrist will help you clean the gel from your face and dispose of the eye shields. Your optometrist may apply a cream or sunblock to your skin to help protect it.

Your optometrist may recommend further IPL treatments to help promote healthy tears for the future.

In the days following, you may experience redness similar to a sunburn following your IPL treatment because of the light used to help alleviate your dry eye symptoms.

Treat Your Dry Eyes

If you are ready to find out what IPL can do for your dry eyes, talk to your optometrist and have a dry eye assessment. We will be happy to answer any of your questions.
